More About Me
I was born Amy Rebekah Epstein, in Memphis, Tennessee, in the fall of 1973. I am the middle child of three. I knew at a really young age that I wanted to be a psychologist, I graduated from White Station High School in 1991 and the University of Memphis (with a B.A. in psychology) in May of 1995. I got married in 1996, to my college sweetheart, Roy Murrell. That same year I started graduate school. In December of 1997, I got a Master’s of Science in General Psychology from the University of Memphis. Then I headed (a little) South to the University of Mississippi. I earned a second Master’s degree (in Clinical Psychology) and my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from there. I did my internship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, finishing up in August of 2005.
I entered graduate school with the desire to do research and clinical work with children and families, and I am still interested in that work. My current interests are: (a) developmental psychopathology and (b) child and parent intervention. I have particular interest in the ways that family contextual variables relate to psychopathology and behavior. A treatment that directly attempts to examine and manipulate context is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I began doing ACT under the guidance of Kelly Wilson in 2000. I have presented and published work on ACT and the theory that underlies it, Relational Frame Theory (RFT), and I currently run an RFT/ACT research team. We are especially interested in application to youth and family populations. I became a Certified ACT Trainer in 2005 and provide consultation and workshops in these areas as well. Please contact me if you are interested in these services.
