The Graduate Students in English Association at the University of North Texas is a student organization representing graduate students studying English literature, creative writing, technical writing, and linguistics at UNT. GSEA hosts an annual graduate student conference each spring. Our members include teaching fellows, academic assistants, research assistants, writing lab tutors, and MA and PhD candidates in general in the English program at UNT. Our members are also active in organizations such as the Modern Language Association, the Shakespeare Association of America, and other professional organizations.
The Call for Papers for the 2008 GSEA Conference has been posted on the Conference page. Additional information on the conference, including the day's schedule as well as lodging and driving directions, are also now available.

Tuition Reimbursements Robert Upchurch, the new Chair of Graduate Studies in English, told GSEA members recently that the University of North Texas has decided to begin a tuition reimbursement program for qualifying students beginning in the Fall 2007 semester. These reimbursements--$50 per graduate credit hour--are only available for graduate students in the following positions: teaching fellow, academic assistant, research assistant, and other qualifying positions. According to Dr. Upchurch, students can expect to see the reimbursements from the Fall on their Spring semester bills. Upchurch Becomes Chair of Graduate Studies Robert Upchurch, known for his medieval studies courses and his abiding interest in medieval English hagiography, has become the English Department's new Chair of Graduate Studies, replacing Brenda Sims. Dr. Sims is expected to move on to the forthcoming Department of Linguistics and Technical Writing in the coming months. |

Teaching Fellows Gain Pay Raise David Holdeman, English Department Chair, announced at the 2007 orientation meeting for teaching fellows that he had successfully lobbied with the university for English TFs to receive a significant pay raise starting with the Fall 2007 semester. Additionally, compensation for teaching fellows will vary depending upon the individual student's progress in the program (i.e., starting MA student, continuing MA student, and so forth). |
2007 Meet and Greet a Success GSEA hosted its second annual Meet and Greet for graduate students and faculty on September 18, 2007 in the departmental lounge in the Language Building. GSEA members brought the refreshments while graduate students and English faculty met and enjoyed themselves. |

2007-2008 Officers Announced Danny Hoey and Karen Williams will serve as GSEA's co-presidents for the 2007-2008 academic year. The other officers for GSEA will include the following: Jessica Oxendine, vice-president; Pam Harper, secretary; Jared Landin, treasurer; Fern Bugg, membership officer; Christian Worlow, web administrator. |
Call for Donations Last year's GSEA book sale raised hundreds of dollars for the Pearla Marquez Graduate Memorial Scholarship. GSEA plans to have another book sale to help support this scholarship. Currently, we're planning on holding the book sale in early Spring 2008. However, we'll begin taking donations for the book sale in the coming weeks.
