» ABOUT ME

My name is Rémi A. van Compernolle and I'm currently an Adjunct Faculty member in French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of North Texas. I received my M.A. in French from UNT in May 2007 and will be starting Ph.D. coursework in French Linguistics in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at the Pennsylvania State University in Fall 2008.

My research focuses on sociolinguistic and pragmatic variation in French-language computer-mediated communication contexts. I am particularly interested in how online groups and communities establish linguistic norms, and how these norms vary across groups and types of online communication. A related area of interest is in socially-oriented approaches to second language teaching and learning, with a particular focus on how learners learn what constitutes socially appropriate speech in context.
