1961-1996

This homepage is dedicated to Gwyn Williams who we came to know in an early cyberspace age in Thailand, circa 1992. Our cyber paths crossed in Usenet newsgroup - soc.culture.thai - a true cyber community, if not the only community, for some of us.

As with real life democratic community, we had workers, thinkers, thugs, clowns, and wise men. Gwyn Williams was one of our wise men. His words, ideas and postings were often listened to. He was a regular and respectable contributor in the newsgroup. As a linguist and a lecturer at Thammasat University, he was our language authority. He gave clue to the origin of the word "farang" - used by Thais to refer to Westerners. In his last year, he compiled an extensive and resourceful Bangkok Budget Accommodations - a collection of guide books and insightful experiences of Thailand travelers.

Gwyn Williams is remembered and missed by friends whose lives - real or virtual - were touched by him. From this world he departed but in the world of virtual community, he is forever with us.

May 19, 1999.
