Puppy Photos & Announcement of
A New Litter (11548 bytes)

A 5 week old longcoated pup(28097 bytes)

Because we feel strongly that unwanted puppies should not be brought into the world, we raise less than 1 litter each year of Akbash Dogs. This breed is unique and wonderful; however, it is not a breed for everyone. Rather than having "ready made" puppies waiting to be bought on impulse, we prefer to plan our breedings in advance and limit the number of pups to be sold each year.

This means that each litter is a big event and that our buyers often have to wait for their pups.  We feel this means they have more time to research the breed and prepare for their puppy. We think these are the best buyers and the best new homes for our pups.

If you are interested in one of our pups, please contact us. But do not be disappointed if you have to wait a little longer before your pup arrives. The best things are worth waiting for.

Patteran Sut Beyaz is the sire of our December 2001 litter. Bey is the grandson of our Patteran "Billy," a full brother to CH Patteran Che, now 9 years old.

We like to work with lines that we know -- that way we can better predict what our dogs will look like and act like when they are mature.

Here Bey is in his winter coat. He is a long coat, but most of the length is seen on his ruff and tail. An Akbash Dog's body coat is affected by the climate. Note that Bey's body coat is not excessively long. This makes his coat easy to care for. (We rarely brush our dogs. They shed easily and their coats rarely mat.) This also makes the breed very versatile and easily adapted to warm climates -- or cold.

Patteran Pamuk and her 3 day old pups. THE NEW LITTER: Shown here is Patteran Pamuk ("Pam") with her 4 day old pups. Like Siamese kittens, Akbash Dog pups are born with pink noses, toe pads, and lips.  This pigment very soon begins to darken to chocolate brown or black.
COAT AND PIGMENT COLOR:  At 3 weeks, the pups now have solid dark pigmentation on nose, lips, eye rims, as well as their toe pads. In addition to being solid, it is also very dark.  Chocolate or dark brown pigment is equally acceptable, and often a dog's pigment will change depending on climate, season, age, and other factors.

COAT LENGTH:  Akbash Dogs come in short and long coats with most having coats lengths somewhere in between. Climate seriously affects the amount of coat a mature dog will have.  In contrast to Bey, Pam is a short coat. Most of our pups are intermediate coated - having more coat than Pam.  It is can be very difficult to tell the ultimate length of coat on a young dog (or even the true coat length of a mature dog) because in warm climates even a long coated dog will have less coat and in cold climates even a short coated dog will have a thick, double coat! For that reason, coat length should never be the criteria for selecting an Akbash Dog.

At the right is Aziz, 2 yrs. old, a full brother to the new litter. He, like Pam, is a short coat.

How do I reserve a puppy? How do I get the best puppy for me and how do I pick it up?

Most Akbash Dog owners buy their first dog sight unseen.  Potential buyers through the years have often asked us how we choose the best puppy in a litter. Usually there is not a single "best" puppy in a litter.  The best dog is the one that best suits the owner's needs.  To be honest, we feel that picking a reputable, experienced breeder is the most important step in purchasing a puppy or older dog whether it be an Akbash Dog, a Kangal Dog, or any other breed. A reputable breeder is one who is careful to match pups with potential homes; an experienced breeder is better able to predict disposition and conformation.

Since 1985 we have selected pups for our new owners, keeping in mind the type of dog they need. Many of our owners are repeat buyers, coming back over the years to buy a second, third, and even fourth dog from us. We can't ask for a better endorsement than that. Once we have talked and established that an Akbash Dog would fit into your lifestyle, a deposit will hold a puppy for you.

The majority of our pups go to their new homes by air. We ship from Dallas-Ft. Worth International and usually can arrange for a direct flight. We do not ship our pups until after they are 8 weeks of age, which is the youngest age we feel a pup should go to a new home. At this age, they have begun vaccinations and are protected from diseases such as Parvovirus. They also have begun heartworm and parasite prevention. Your pup comes with complete health records and its UKC registration papers, as well as an invitation to join the Akbash Dog Association of America and our email list.
